ECHINACEA PURPUREA / ANGUSTIFOLIA (PURPLE CONEFLOWER)
This North American plant was historically used by the Native American Indians and later discovered by the ‘Eclectic ‘herbalists in America who then brought it to the UK in the 1800’s. They used for all manner of infections such as snakebite, syphilis, typhus, septic wounds, diptheria and so on.
Today, it’s still used for infections of the digestive and urinary systems and particularly infections of the upper respiratory tract. It doesn’t actually contain antimicrobial substances per se but rather, indirectly combats them by stimulating the immune system. It’s also an Anti-inflammatory, Lymphatic and Alterative so useful in inflammatory conditions and any condition that would benefit from cleansing such as skin conditions.
It also benefits conditions of a weakened immune system.
Externally : it’s used for cleaning infected wounds, poorly healing wounds and inflamed skin conditions.
Phytochemistry: it contains Alkylamides (which cause the characteristic tingling in the mouth); caffeic acid esters i.e echinacoside and essential oil.
Pharmacy: take it as a tincture, a tea / decoction, capsule, throat gargle, throat spray, syrup, lotion, cream, ointment.
Herbs from the Herbalist come with a decent strength and individual dosage advice.
